 Work Teams in Sri Lanka

Work team is a group whose individual efforts result in performance that is greater than the sum of the individual inputs. So, team generate positive synergy through coordination (Robbins et al, 2022).

Types of Teams

1.     Problem-solving teams – Groups of five to twelve employees from the same department who meet for few hours each week to discuss ways of improving quality, efficiency, and the work environment.

2.     Self-managed work teams – Group of five to fifteen people who autonomously implement solutions and take responsibility for the outcomes.

3.     Cross-functional teams – Employees from about the same hierarchical level but from different work areas who come together to accomplish a task.

4.     Virtual teams – Teams that use technology to tie together physically dispersed members in order to achieve a common goal.

Factors Determine Success of Teams

1.     Adequate Resources – A scarcity of resources directly reduces the ability of a team to perform its job effectively and achieve its goals. Abundance of timely information, proper equipment, adequate staffing, encouragement and administrative assistance will increase the productivity.

2.     Leadership and Structure – Properly allocate roles and ensure the workload is shared by all team members. Leader personality, engagement and leadership style all have an impact on team effectiveness.

3.     Culture or climate – Trust is a foundation of leadership; it allows a team to accept and commit to the leader’s goal and decision. Members of effective teams exhibit trust in their leaders.

4.     Performance evaluation and reward system – Individual performance evaluations and incentives may interfere with the development of high-performance teams.


Team Composition

Team is a blend of abilities of members, personality of members, allocation of roles, diversity of members, cultural differences, team size and member preferences. Common plan and purpose, motivation level, team efficacy, team identity, team cohesion, conflict level, team trust, social loafing and mental model of the members will impact on team process.
